France Ligue 1 – Angers v Nice Preview (20/8/16)

ANG-NICE

Angers preview

The home team were slightly unlucky to lose at Montpellier last week (0-1). They created enough chances to draw the game but were poor in front of goal. Angers are the sort of side who are poor when chasing matches but strong when level or ahead. Their main strength is defence and keeping things tight, You know under Stephane Moulin they will be pretty good tactically and maintain excellent discipline. Angers signed Mathieu Michel (GK) from Nimes this week and he could become the #1 custodian either for this match or in the future. The western outfit were quite hard to beat at home last season and will hope to be strong in front of their own fans again. The squad isn’t in bad condition although the midfield duo of Mangani & Saiss are both doubtful.

Nice preview

New coach Lucien Favre got off to a winning start in charge of Nice by beating Rennes 1-0 last Sunday. It was an interesting game of football and some people would claim Nice didn’t really deserve three points out of the game. They didn't play too badly though and considering the XI which started was fairly weak, they will certainly accept victory with open arms. Quite a few players are missing again here, especially in defence. Nice always have an array of youngsters who can step in and do a decent job though. Favre showed a willingness to attack against Rennes but it remains to see what his style will be on the road.

Conclusion & betting analysis

This is a really difficult match to predict, maybe the hardest of the day in Ligue 1. Personally, I don’t think it’ll be a classic and entertainment value should be pretty low. It has the feel of a pretty tight match which might even end 0-0. Angers are never the most proactive team, even at home and because they lost last week, might be more cautious. It’s uncertain quite how Nice will approach the game but the traditional style in French football is to be conservative on the road at this stage of the season. I’m not really sure here and the match doesn’t interest me from a betting point of view. The bookies seem to have their lines set quite fair, so I’m happy to leave it alone.
