The hosts blew a 2-0 lead at Monaco last week but generally their performance was encouraging. For a good hour or so they matched their illustrious opponents and I’m sure new boss Antoine Kombouare would’ve accepted a point if he’d been offered it before hand. He is a good manager at this level and deals well with youth players. The general attitude of Kombouare is to be positive and his teams usually have a big threat. A very similar squad is named for this match with the one new addition being left back Marcal. This position has been a big problem for the Brittany club so it’ll be interesting to see how good he is. I expect a really passionate partisan crowd at Le Stade Roudourou with a packed house to see Marseille.
OM drew their first fixture in what was an uninspiring 0-0 draw against Toulouse. Not a lot seems to have changed with the Mediterranean giants and on paper I think their squad looks nothing better than a mistable outfit. There is a sprinkling of quality, but as I expected they lack in all areas of the field. New left back Henri Bedimo is injured, as is winger Romain Alessandrini. A similar squad has been named for this week’s game. Last season OM were much better away from home and it suited them to be on the road. The general mood around the club isn't very positive though and fans aren’t expecting much this season.
Conclusion & betting analysis
I simply can’t resist Guingamp here. They are on a DNB line @ 1.95 and this is a really big price in my opinion. Marseille are always going to be a side affected by reputation and the bookies probably see them as one of the strong forces in French football. The simply and sad fact is that they aren't anymore though. A season of midtable mediocrity looks almost guaranteed and there’s very little in this squad that's going to frighten anyone. Guingamp won this fixture 2-0 last year and totally outfought OM. This match will probably mean more to them and the hostile home crowd should be able to aid them. Marseille don’t convince me at the moment so I’m happy to go against them.
Recommended bet: Guingamp DNB @ 1.95 (minimum odds acceptable 1.75)
