France Ligue 2 – Orleans v Auxerre Preview (26/8/16)

USO-AJA

Orleans preview

After losing their first two games, Orleans have steadied the ship thanks to a win against Ajaccio (2-0) and then a credible 0-0 away at Sochaux. Their two cup matches have ended 1-0 and 0-0, the most recent being on Tuesday night when they were eliminated on penalties by Laval. You tend to know what you're going to get with Orleans - fairly tight and low scoring matches in a similar fashion to what they were like a couple of years ago in this ligue. A few players are still out injured, including centre back Antar Yahia, whilst striker Livio Nabab is suspended for five games following a challenge on Sochaux keeper Olivier Werner last week. Of course, it’s worth noting that Orleans played extra time just three nights ago and fielded a relatively strong team so they might be lacking freshness.

Auxerre preview

It’s already blindingly obvious that Auxerre are going to be an extremely inconsistent side this season. Last week they were really poor at home to Clermont, deserving to lose 0-1 and they didn't create much. Prior to that they’d been excellent beating Bourg-en-Bresse 4-2 away from home. Both of their better displays in the ligue have been on the road this season which is unusual for French football. New coach Viorel Moldovan has come in and promised attacking football and he’s delivered in some matches. Moldovan clearly loves youth and has been giving a lot of chances to players from the Auxerre academy. When a lot of young players are involved then you will always get very inconsistent performances. There’s plenty of pace in this team which should suit them on the road. AJA have plenty of injuries at the back where Baba Traore, Mickael Tacalfred & Ruben Aguilar have all yet to play a single minute yet this season. Centre back Stephane Sparagna is suspended.

Conclusion & betting analysis

This is a horrible match to analyse. I have to admit I’m finding it extremely difficult to predict Auxerre at the moment. You don’t know which version of them will turn up, but based on what we've seen so far then they’ll probably produce a decent display tonight. They seem to enjoy playing on the road and their fast counter attacks could cause Orleans some problems. The hosts aren't the most adventurous side in the world though and could sit relatively deep. This has the feeling of a draw or an away win but I’m really not sure. I have absolutely no intention of getting involved here and the bookies seem to have the match priced up fairly accurately. You have a clash of styles with the negative Orleans against a potentially attack minded Auxerre. I would saying backing the visitors and overs could potentially yield some profit, but it’s simply far too dangerous to get involved and I’m very happy to leave this one alone.
