France Ligue 1 – Lorient v Lyon Preview (24/9/16)

fcl-olLorient preview

  • Rock bottom of the table having lost 5 of their 6 matches.
  • Have failed to score in most games and their offense is lacking this season.
  • Have shown some slight improvements in recent matches and were unlucky to lose at Guingamp in midweek (0-1)
  • Luck doesn’t seem to be going their way and a lot of little things are against them right now.
  • They have a few injuries across the board, mostly to players who have missed a number of games this season. Midfielder Cafu returns for today’s match which is a boost.

Lyon preview

  • Victory in midweek 5-1 against Montpellier was their first in four games and they’ll be relieved to be back to winning ways.
  • Playing against 10 men for most of the encounter and obtaining such an easy win was just what they wanted from a midweek fixture.
  • Key players are still ruled out, the most notable being striker Alexandre Lacazette. Captain in the middle Maxime Gonalons completes his final game ban.
  • The squad is however looking healthier at the moment and a number of young players have been catching the eye with some impressive displays.

Conclusion & betting analysis

  • Lyon used to struggle to win at Le Moustoir so will be pleased to see that the pitch is now grass and not artificial.
  • Lyon are the better team and should be able to dominate the match. Some of their performances have been under par this season though, for example losing at home to Bordeaux and losing at Dijon.
  • I’m not sure Lorient have the confidence to cause them any problems at the moment and they are really lacking a mojo.
  • Under normal circumstances this would be an automatic over bet. The line is set at 2.5 and is quite tempting, in theory this should be an open game.
  • However, Lorient’s lack of goals is really worrying at the moment and can’t be ignored. It’s for this reason why I ultimately have to avoid the overs. They’ve scored just one goal from open play since matchday one.
  • I’m happy to take Lyon on a -0.25 handicap. At very worst they should draw the game and it’s difficult to envisage Lorient winning based on current form.

Prediction: 1-3
