Africa Cup of Nations – Ghana v Uganda Preview (17/1/16)

Match preview

I have previewed both of these teams in-depth in my pre tournament posts, for more click here. For those who have read my posts or listened to my podcast thoughts about Ghana then you’ll realise they are my ‘lay’ of the tournament. I just don’t like what I see. Their build up hasn’t been great and some strange player omissions have taken place, not least Majeed Waris who continues to be in great form for Lorient, yet Avram Grant left him out. Ghana still have plenty of good players but my suspicion is they’ll flatter to deceive in this tournament. However, it’s quite possible they’ll get off to a winning start. Uganda are no mugs but if the Black Stars are to progress then three points in this game is something they need to obtain. Uganda will probably set out their stall to defend and sit deep. Perhaps they’ll get too deep in the latter stages of the match, inviting a lot of pressure. If the underdogs held out for a 0-0 or 1-1 draw then I wouldn't be surprised but I actually have a gut feeling Ghana will sneak a 1-0 win. I considered under 2 goals but this isn’t really my sort of bet, so I’ll give it a miss.

Prediction: 1-0
