I have to admit I know little about their keeper or defenders. I doubt many people will, unless you are a follower of the lower Portuguese leagues. Most of the players from this area are either without a club or reside in this section of Portuguese football. The midfield contains a few guys with whom I am familiar. Captain Bocundji Ca has been without a club for a year but spent five campaigns at Reims, some of which were in Ligue 1. He's not a bad player and lining up with him in the middle for his international debut may well be Stromsgodset man Francisco Junior.
This is debatable though because one of their key men is sure to be attacking midfielder Zezinho who plays for Greek Superleague side Levadiakos. He was their leading scorer in qualification netting two goals, nobody else scored more than one. Leading the line for them upfront is likely to be Frederic Mendy. He is someone who has spent most of his career in Asia, places like Singapore & Korea and enjoyed some success. He only has one cap for his country but managed to score a goal during that appearance. Most of the rest of the squad is largely unknown. A fair number of guys are either without a club or have been without one at some stage in the last year.
Draw & outlook
Guinea Bissau are making their debut in the African Nations Cup and are one of the big minnows in the event. They’ve done superbly to qualify and the key was a brace of 1-0 wins against Kenya. The likes of Congo & Zambia all finished below them in the table. I just get the feeling they enjoyed a freak campaign. Liberia knocked them out of World Cup Qualifying and they didn’t even make the final group stage of that. The ‘Djurtus’ get to kick off the tournament against host nation Gabon and then have to face Cameroon. Those two games will probably result in defeat but they’ll maybe get a chance to sneak something against Burkina Faso in the final group game. Realistically, Baciro Cande’s men are just here for the experience and to enjoy themselves. I’d be surprised if they put up much resistance and the most likely outcome is a pointless return.
