This is a massive game of football between two arch rivals at the bottom of the table. Both teams absolutely hate each other and this is actually one of the big derbies of the season in Norway. Mjøndalen managed to pick up bragging rights earlier in the season with a 3-2 victory at Marienlyst so Godset will be desperate for revenge. The visitors are in a much better state than they were earlier in the campaign because new manager Henrik Pedersen has seen them win 5 of their last 8 games. SIF suffered a slight setback by losing at home to Odd last week (2-3) but that is facing third in the table so we shouldn’t be too harsh on them there. Godset aren’t usually very good on their travels but again Pedersen appears to have improved them in that department, even managing to win up at Tromso a couple of weeks ago.
I do worry about Mjøndalen and I suspect along with Ranheim they are the most likely team to be directly relegated. MIF have lost 4 of their last 5 games and have been involved in quite a tough gruelling schedule recently. They also lost in the Norwegian Cup at home to Haugesund last Thursday. From a defensive point of view things have been very poor with the clean sheet in the league match at Haugesund the lone exception recently. Both Viking and Kristiansund have put four goals past them in recent times and opposition attackers will fancy their chances against this unit. This fixture always has a history of goals, it always feels like both teams just go hell for leather trying to win. So I’m going to back over 2.5 goals tonight at a decent price. The only worry is if both teams are afraid of losing such a massive fixture but I suspect it will be an open encounter again. Based on what I’ve seen recently Strømsgodset will probably get the 3 points as well.
