France Ligue 2 – Sochaux v Troyes Preview (30/11/19)

Match Preview

Both sides have to rebound from disappointing 0-4 defeats last week. In the case of Sochaux I’m more inclined to let them off because they were away to Lens and also had to play with 10 men for over an hour. This means that centre back Christophe Diedhiou is suspended for today’s clash. He has featured in all but one of Les Lionceaux’s matches this season. Troyes have a couple of significant injuries in that right back Oualid El Hajam and midfielder Maxime Barthelme both miss out. The former was also suspended last week and was badly missed as Chambly caused all sorts of problems down that side of the pitch on the way to a shock 4-0 victory at Le Stade l’Aube. I backed Troyes to win last week and it kind of annoyed me because I have said that they are fairly overrated for most of this season. That 0-4 loss was harsh on them but did ask many questions about their defence especially. Sochaux have a brilliant home record of 5-2-1 and only conceded three goals in front of their own fans. If they can rebound well enough then I think there’s some value in backing them today on a DNB handicap. Troyes tend to be this ‘all or nothing’ team who either win or lose so hopefully they will have another poor result.

Prediction: 1-0

Recommended bet: Sochaux DNB @1.80

France Ligue 2 – Valenciennes v Lens Preview (29/11/19)

Match Preview

Here we have a northern derby between a couple of rivals. Lens took some time to warm up this season but are now starting to stamp their authority on the league. They have the best squad in Ligue 2 and one of the best coaches so it’s no surprise to see them top of the table. Lens are unbeaten in 10 matches and won 7 of their last 9. Clean sheets in 6 of those contests have paved the way for a very successful run. Lens have started to spank a few teams as well, with the 4-0 victory vs Sochaux very encouraging last weekend They were aided by a red card for the opposition but demonstrated an ability to dominate who were perceived as potentially tricky opponents. Here tonight they are odds-on favourites away at Valenciennes. This has been a fixture that Lens have struggled in recently. Les Sang et Or have lost on both of their last two visits to Le Stade de Hainault and actually not mamaged to beat VA in any of the last four H2Hs. A low scoring draw tonight wouldn't surprise me. VA tend to be hard to break down and are involved in some really tight encounters. Under 2 or 2.25 goals could be a good pick but anything can happen in a derby match, like the 4-2 result last season proved. Lens are just starting to find their shooting boots as well so I will give this match a miss.

Prediction: 1-1

France Ligue 2 – Rodez v Le Havre Preview (29/11/19)

Match Preview

Rodez have been a bit of our form, losing their last 3 consecutively and 6 of their last 8. Tonight they are given a timely boost by playing at their ‘real home’ for the first time this season. Le Stade Paul Lignon wasn’t fit for Liue 2 purposes back in August but is now declared open and available for action. RAF actually had a fairly decent record over in Toulouse but that is over 2 hours away and everyone will be glad to be back playing in their own city. Rodez had some tough fixtures in recent weeks but will be disappointed to lose at Niort last Friday, that is the sort of match they need to be getting something out of. Le Havre travel here having finally ended their 8 match winless run. They did it in fine style as well, hammering Guingamp 4-0 on Monday night. That should surely give them the boost and confidence they need to kick on. But HAC haven’t actually scored a single goal on the road since late August and I suspect this could be a tricky night for them in front of a pumped up Rodez on their big night at this stadium. I think the hosts are a big price on a +0.25 handicap and can at worst pick themselves up a draw. Maybe the bookies have forgotten that Rodez aren’t playing home matches at a neutral venue anymore because Le Havre really have no business being a -0.25 away favourite tonight.

Prediction: 2-1

Recommended bet: Rodez +0.25 @2.01

France Ligue 2 – Nancy v Paris FC Preview (29/11/19)

Match Preview

Nancy are the biggest draw specialist in this league. Incredibly, 11 of their 15 matches have ended all squad and ultimately this is hampering their progress. You feel as if this squad should probably have more points on the board but the lack of a killer instinct is perhaps holding them back. One thing I will say is that a lot of their recent home games have been against higher class opposition, so draws vs Lens, Troyes and Lorient probably have to be seen as a positive. Nancy have mostly managed to beat the poorer outfits here although whether Paris FC can be classed in that category anymore is questionable. PFC had a nightmare start to the season but have rebounded well recently by keeping clean sheets in 5 out of 6 matches. Their gameplan tonight will probably be to keep things tight and make themselves hard to break down. Nancy have quality in the final third like Wagner & Bassi but for some reason are having issues unlocking defences of late. I rate them but couldn’t be backing the home team at a short 1.75 price. Sooner or later they will break out of this draw funk but something like a 0-0 or 1-1 wouldn’t surprise me.

Prediction: 1-1

France Ligue 2 – Lorient v Grenoble Preview (29/11/19)

Match Preview

Lorient roared back to form by beating Niort and Chateauroux in recent weeks 4-1 and 3-1 respectively. This will on paper be a tougher test facing a Grenonle team that has only lost twice all season. The last time that GF38 lost in the league was way back on 23rd August. The visitors have a draw problem but tend to be a tough nut to crack. There is however some team news that is unfavourable for them. Two key components from their defence, Eric Vandenebeele & Pierre Gibaud are both injured, whilst top scorer Moussa Djite is another casualty. One of the most impressive things about Grenoble during their unbeaten run has been such a strong solid defensive line and I worry about it being changed Lorient could take advantage. The bookmakers aren’t stupid though and FCL are a fairly short priced favourite tonight, around the 1.57 mark. There isn’t much juice in the -0.75 Asian line either so if you want to back them at a decent price then you are going to have to commit to the -1. Considering the team news i do think that Lorient get the business done tonight but despite some absences I’m still keen to avoid betting against Grenoble, who have that knack of avoiding defeat. I’ll leave this one alone.

Prediction: 2-0

France Ligue 2 – Le Mans v Chateauroux Preview (29/11/19)

Match Preview

Le Mans have certainly improved their form after a very difficult start to the season. I said for a long time that they were better than their league position suggested and now that looks quite an accurate assessment of where they were at. There is great fight in this team and they came from 1-3 down to draw at Caen last Friday. However, results in other matches have left them second bottom of the table. This is actually a battle between 19th and 18th although in a similar way to Le Mans, La Berrichonne de Chateauroux have improved their form in recent times. Yes, they lost vs Lorient last week but I won't hold that against them due to the strength of opposition. My suspicion is that Le Mans will win this match but they won’t have as much space tonight and Chateauroux likely travel here with a defensive gameplan. The prices look about fair and not enough to tempt me into anything.

Prediction: 1-0

France Ligue 2 – Guingamp v Caen Preview (29/11/19)

Match Preview

Guingamp produced a very poor second half performance against Le Havre on Monday night, losing 0-4 at Le Stade Oceane. This was the first time since Sylvain Didot took over that they ran into major difficulties. Guingamp have a squad which shouldn’t have the sort of issues but there appears to be a soft underbelly and the squad still hasn't fully recovered after relegation. Caen have of course endured similar problems since being demoted back to Ligue 2 and also had to already sack their manager this season. Pascal Dupraz remains unbeaten since taking over at the helm and has brought a change of system and identity to the club. However, they blew a 3-1 lead at home to Le Mans last week and could only draw 3-3. It’s the third time that Caen have failed to hold onto a lead under Dupraz and they have issues seeing out matches. These two teams have met regularly in Ligue 1 the last few seasons and incredibly the last four H2Hs have all ended 0-0! Yet it is the overs I fancy tonight. The last four Caen matches have ended 4-2, 2-1, 1-1 and 3-3. Dupraz is an attack minded coach and it’s clear Guingamp have issues at the back for them to take advantage of tonight. In previous years this was always a tight battle towards the bottom of the ligue 1 table between negative managers. The situation has now changed and I think we will get a much more open encounter this evening., Over 2 goals is reasonably priced around the 1.80 mark and hopefully the recent H2H trend won’t continue!

Prediction: 2-2

Recommended bet: Over 2 goals @1.80

France Ligue 2 – Clermont v Niort Preview (29/11/19)

Match Preview

Clermont have picked up their form a bit recently but it’s still worth noting that they haven’t won at home since the opening day of the season! Quite what the problem has been in front of their own fans I’m not sure. Recent 0-1 defeats at this stadium vs Rodez & Le Mans don’t make for great reading and should be a warning sign for anyone backing them tonight at a short price. Clermont are -1 Asian Handicap favourites and this does feel too short. I don’t rate Niort much at all but they did just win last week so should come into the contest in better spirits. The visitors also still have somewhat of an injury crisis and look especially vulnerable in midfield with both Jacob & Louiserre (susp) missing out. This is the sort of match which Clermont ‘should’ be winning fairly easily but I just don’t see any value on them here. I have noticed Pascal Gastien’s side continually overrated by the bookies this season and here we have another example. If they get the job done, then well done to them, but I’m happy to leave this one alone.

Prediction: 2-1

France Ligue 2 – Chambly v Ajaccio Preview (29/11/19)

Match Preview

Chambly caught me out last week by hammering Troyes 4-0 away from home. This result did flatter them but I have to commend the way Chambly set themselves up. They were generally hard to break down, which isn’t unusual, but also offered a great outlet in attack and a genuine threat on the break. It was one of those nights where literally ‘everything’ went in the back of the net for FCC but I would imagine the confidence and belief they can take from that match will be immense. Tonight is a completely different kettle of fish vs an Ajaccio side who will set up with a similar approach. I expect defence to be first and foremost for both sides here and nobody will want to give much space up. The likely result is a tight and cagey affair decided by set pieces. Ajaccio are really strong in this area so I could see them nicking something like a 1-0 win. Under 2 goals was something I looked at, but overall I prefer not to get involved. The visitors DNB is perhaps another temptation. There is something about Ajaccio this season which has seen a vast improvement away from home and I wouldn’t be betting against them.

Prediction: 0-1

France Ligue 2 – Auxerre v Orleans Preview (29/11/19)

Match Preview

Auxerre are suddenly struggling. They are winless in five games and dropped down the standings after what was a reasonably encouraging start to the campaign. I said last week that Jean Marc Furlan has probably taken on his toughest job here in Auxerre, who are a club in a funk and have been for a while. On paper they should be performing much better, but this has been said for years now and the general malaise around the club seems to be affecting everyone. This regularly happens at home where the atmosphere can be flat and not very intimidating. Tonight they face an Orleans side who are bottom of the table and desperately struggling. It is worth nothing that USO have only lost 2 out of 7 games on the road though and seem to prefer it on their travels. Auxerre won both fixtures between the clubs 3-0 last season but prior to that this was a happy hunting ground for Orleans. Maybe they can catch AJA out on the break at times here. There is part of me that is tempted to back Auxerre around the even money mark. This could look a big price if they finally perform as expected. But I don’t see either side as trustworthy right now so happy to leave this one alone.

Prediction: 2-1
