Norway Eliteserien – Mjøndalen v Bodø/Glimt Preview (18/7/20)

Match Preview

Mjøndalen have now lost 4 of their last 5 games and it might be that this hectic season is starting to catch up with them. Vegard Hansen’s men have put in some very credible performances recently and were unlucky to lose to Molde and Vålerenga. They also gave it a good go in the midweek derby against Godset but came up short. One thing you do know is that this is a team that will always give everything and fight hard right until the death. Injuries are starting to catch up with them though. The likes of Gauseth, Lars Olden Larsen and Sondre Liseth are all doubtful today, whilst central midfielder Stian Aaasmundsen is suspended. Mjøndalen don’t have the biggest squad in the world and lack quality depth so could suffer as a result.

Bodø/Glimt travel here with a 100% record. They had to dig deep and come from behind in midweek vs Kristiansund and needed a late Marius Lode wondergoal to see them over the line 2-1. Glimt have been magnificent this season and don’t seem for the stopping right now. They themselves have had injuries recently though. Key winger Jens Petter Hauge was absent from Wednesday's match and is doubtful again here. Centre back Brede Moe has missed the last two games through injury. The two meetings last season ended in a wild 5-4 Glimt win at this venue, and a 0-0 draw up north.

Mjøndalen manager Vegard Hansen played smart in that goalless draw last year and you can be sure he will give Glimt full respect, unlike some teams who still don’t take them seriously enough. I fully expect MIF to be deep, physical, defensive and basically try every trick in the book to frustrate their opponents with set pieces and time wasting when they can. I saw signs on Wednesday for the first time that Glimt were maybe a little tired and it might be a case of they just do enough to get the job done again here. Something like a 1-2 away win is what I’m predicting and the away handicap or over 3.5 goals doesn’t tempt me. Mjøndalen won’t just lie down and take a beating and could be more competitive than expected.

Prediction: 1-2
