Norway Eliteserien – Stabaek v Rosenborg Preview (5/7/20)

Match Preview

Stabaek have won both of their last couple of home games by the same 2-0 scoreline. They’ve actually yet to concede a goal at the Nadderud Stadion this season. This isn’t too much of a surprise because ever since manager Jan Jonsson took over midway through last season his team have been really solid. Stabaek have some very good young players and one new signing for 2020 Kornelius Hanssen scored an excellent brace in midweek vs SIF. With lads like Vetelsen, Edvardsen plus a good mix of experienced players it feels like there is the right sort of balance to this Stabaek side. They have a knack for pushing Rosenborg quite hard in recent years, with the double 0-0 in 2017 standing out. Some negatives for Stabaek are the Luc Kasssi injury and the doubtful status of key centre back Yaw Amankwah.

Rosenborg travel here having obviously endured quite a torrid season so far. They are 11th in the table and still managerless. Caretaker boss Trond Fredriksen has led them to a win at Brann and a draw vs VIF. To be honest those results aren’t too bad and RBK have improved a bit since Eirik Horneland was sacked. Something still isn;’t quite right with this team though. The arrival of striker Torgeir Børven should at least give them a boost and the expectation is that he will start here. The likes of Adegbenro, Konradsen and Reitan are still injured though. It looks like Valsvik will be coming in to replace one of the ageing centre backs to give some fresh legs. RBK need more intensity and to create more chances. But it’s an old squad that could probably do with a week to rest up and heal.

Under 2.5 goals probably wouldn’t be a bad pick here. The strength of both teams is more in defence and this could be a cagey affair at times. I'm surprised Stabaek are considered so much of an underdog though. They are in a good place right now, confidence is in the team and they have the young talented fresh legs to cause all sorts of problems to RBK. This could easily end a draw but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Stabaek won the match. Taking them +0.25 feels like an attractive prospect. I don’t underestimate Rosenborg but Stabaek are a legitimately good team who should at worst be a DNB handicap for this game.

Prediction: 1-0
