Norway Eliteserien – Start v Mjøndalen Preview (2/8/20)

Match Preview

Start suffered a heartbreaker in midweek when they lost 2-3 away at fellow relegation rivals Aalesund. They had shown some encouraging signs by drawing against the likes of Rosenborg and Brann recently but blew all that by losing to AFK. Start aren’t bottom of the table but they are the only team in the Eliteserien yet to win a match this season. They have a brutal looking run of fixtures coming up soon, facing the likes of Molde, Glimt, VIF and Kristiansund so the need to get 3 points here is huge. There are a few injury concerns across the board with goalkeeper Deumeland and attacker Bringaker the most serious doubts. Start have only lost twice at home this season and one of those was a last minute gut wrencher vs Molde so can at least take some confidence out of their form at the Sør Arena.

Mjøndalen travel here in trouble having lost their last 6 consecutive games. It has been a brutal run of games though and the only real soft opponent they faced during this period was Sandefjord. MIF have to feel like they have a better chance today but it’s never easy when you are losing matches all of the time. I feel that Mjøndalen have been ‘close’ to picking up results in some games but their lack of attacking weapons and quality is hindering them. MIF are very physical and sometimes this has been to their detriments. Referees seem to have targeted them this season and they’ve been on the wrong end of a number of poor decisions. I’ve mentioned before how these bottom of the table clashes can either be tight and cautious or wild. This could go either way but I suspect this will be a tense one which neither want to lose. Nothing interests me from a betting point of view.
