Norway Eliteserien – Vålerenga v Sandefjord Preview (22/8/20)

Match Preview

Vålerenga suffered a last gasp defeat away at Start on Monday night and head coach Dag Eilev Fagermo would've been furious. VIF had more than enough chance to win the game and there’s no way it should’ve been a loss. It was only the third time he has suffered defeat since taking charge of the club and cost them a chance to close in on the top three. ‘Enga have been wildly up and down recently beating Brann, putting up a good performance at home to Glimt (2-2) but losing at Molde 4-1 and then the nightmare of Monday night. They are struggling for consistency and somewhat lacking identity. The defence seems to have gone off form following what was a period of four consecutive clean sheets. Injuries and suspensions haven’t helped with both fullbacks Sam Adekugbe and Christian Borchgrevink missing some matches. VIF should be at full strength for this match though.

Travelling here are a plucky Sandefjord side who are probably punching above their weight in 11th position. I say this every week but head coach Marti Cifuentes is doing a magnificent job getting the most out of a squad that lacks talent. Sandefjord came just 10 mins away from holding Glimt to a draw last week and gave a very good account of themselves. Victories against Molde and Godset stand out and they’ve actually won 4 of their last 7 games. Centre back Marc Vales is suspended but at least they welcome back Martin Kreuzrigler from his ban.

It’s true that Sandefjord did win their last away match in Godset but they were quite lucky and a crucial penalty save probably turned the game in their favour. They have lost 5 out of 7 on the road and logically on paper Vålerenga should have too much for them here. VIF are unbeaten at home this season and they have the quality to get the job done. The price on ‘Enga doesn’t look too bad either and they can be backed on a -0.75 Asian Handicap around the 1.90 mark. I could see this being a 2-0 or 3-0 type of game and I don’t think Sandefjord will offer too much of a threat now that VIF have their first choice defence all fit and available again.

Prediction: 2-0

Recommended bet: Vålerenga -0.75 Asian Handicap @1.90
