France Ligue 2 – Chambly v Clermont Preview (16/10/20)

Match Preview

Chambly

The ‘home’ team have 5 points on the board and have generally struggled this season. Their lone victory was against Chateauroux, although to be fair FCC have been relatively competitive in most fixtures. The squad here isn’t the greatest and everyone knows they are in for a difficult campaign. Chambly are hoping to play at their own stadium in the next few months but for now they remain at Le Stade Pierre Brisson in Beauvais which is about 50 miles away. This hasn’t been a great venue for them in the last 16 months and already this season Chambly have lost 2 out of 3 here. FCC do have a few injuries ahead of this game. The biggest absences which stand out are centre back Guillaume Dequaire and striker Joris Correa. The latter has qualities which can make a difference and will be missed in my opinion.

Clermont

The visitors travel here 8th in the table and had a very good win last time out against Clermont 3-0. Prior to that game they had a problem scoring goals but that was a very comfortable success. New striker Jordan Tell missed the last four matches due to injury but returns to the squad tonight. Whether he is the answer for them upfront remains to be seen but in Pascal Gastien Clermont have one of the best coaches in the league who has this side regularly playing good football. A couple of major absences will hinder them tonight though. Key midfielder Johann Gastien is suspended, whilst winger David Gomis is injured for 2-3 weeks.

Conclusion & Betting analysis

These two sides only met once last season and it was a match Clermont won 1-0. They were a similar price on that occasion too, around the 2.10 mark. I wouldn’t be surprised if this match ended 0-1 again but I’m not interested in backing the visitors at these odds. Chambly can be a very frustrating and annoying team to break down. Even as the designated home team they are likely to sit deep and make themselves hard to break down. The Clermont attack force still doesn’t convince me and they can fire blanks too often for my liking. There is no doubt that Clermont are the better team but the risk of a 0-0 or 1-1 draw is probably too high to consider betting on them tonight, especially considering Gastien and Gomis are both out.
