France Ligue 2 – Pau v Niort Preview (24/10/20)

Match Preview

Pau FC

The newly promoted outfit are the only remaining side in Ligue 2 without a victory this season. As a result, Pau sit bottom of the table and it could be a long season ahead. Scoring goals has been their major issue and only twice have they managed to hit the back of the net. I watched them last week away to Paris FC and to be honest wouldn’t have been undeserving of a draw. It just seems in the crucial moments at both ends of the pitch they are lacking something. I have seen signs of promise though and their attackers like Cheikh Sabaly, Ebenezer Assifuah and Jarju are willing runners who could have some good days soon. From a defensive point of view Pau have only kept one clean sheet but not leaked huge amounts of goals since the opening day of the season. The squad is in fine condition health wise and they have drawn 2 of their 3 home matches so far which isn’t too bad.

Niort

It was a welcome return to winning ways for Les Chamois as they comfortably beat Caen 3-0 last week. It has been a very good start to the season for new coach Sebastian Desabre and heading into the round Niort were situated in the dizzy heights of second place. This is a tremendous achievement when you consider the limitations of this squad. Niort have no new injuries to worry about although there are a few guys still out on the sidelines long term. On the road two 1-0 wins were followed up by a 0-2 loss at Chateauroux. Perhaps that result shows that they maybe don’t like being in the position of being favourites and fancied to go well. There is a similar situation today so perhaps we should be cautious.

Conclusion & Betting analysis

Pau are slight DNB favourites with the bookies which is probably about fair. I could actually see them winning this match and it is the type of fixture they’ll fancy getting 3 points out of. Niort are going well but are probably in a false position, it’s hard to see them keeping it up long term. The visitors do have a lot more momentum though so I can certainly see the case for them winning as well. It’s a difficult match to predict and maybe something like a 1-1 draw is on the cards. I have no betting interest here.
