France Ligue 2 – Orleans v Ajaccio Preview (12/8/16)

Orleans preview

The newly promoted side obtained a morale boosting win in the cup midweek, beating Tours 1-0. They are joint bottom of the current Ligue 2 table with no points after two games. They've perhaps been unfortunate to have faced two of the better teams, Le Havre and Brest. It’s fair to say Orleans haven't looked out of their depth, it’s just at crucial moments they've conceded goals in games. They need to deliver a full 90 mins without mistakes if they are to pick up consistent results at this level. Key playmaker Karim Ziani is still injured and they’ll miss his ability to unlock defences. Striker, Kevin Dupuis is also ruled out because of injury. The coach stuck with a strong XI in midweek but this might be a positive thing allowing the regular starters to gain rhythm and of course notching a win under their belt.

Ajaccio preview

ACA lost heavily in the midweek cup at Lens. They fielded a fairly strong side too, so fitness and fatigue could be an issues here. Ajaccio have a fairly small squad so midweek games are never an ideal thing for them. The Corsican’s certainly can’t complain about their start in Ligue 2 this year though. They had the better of a 0-0 draw at Tours on the opening day, then convincingly beat Troyes 2-1 last week. They were clearly the dominant side in that match and deserved to score more goals. Hitting the back of the net remains their big problem and if they could finish then they’d have bagged about half a dozen goals already. Chances are being created, but either poor finishing or poor decision making in the final third cost them. ACA have a poor away record and rarely play well on the road. But their display at Tours was encouraging and maybe a warning side that they could be more useful on the road this campaign.

Conclusion & betting analysis

This should be a close match, capable of going either way. The bookies look to have priced up the game really wisely as well. I don’t see any value on either side or in any of the goals markets. Truth be told it's a difficult match to predict. Ajaccio rarely win away, so a safe bet would usually be Orleans -0.25. But something irks me about the way Ajaccio have played this season, they've been surprisingly good. Orleans have lost both fixtures so far, so will likely be quite nervous. It’s shaping up to be a low scoring game, maybe even a 0-0. Orleans should see this as a great chance to take a victory though, so I’d imagine they give it a good go. Overall, it does feel very drawish so I’ll predict 1-1. From a betting point of view this match doesn’t interest me at all and it’s a clear fixture to avoid.
